A segment that changes when the person does

First-time visitors, monthly donors, and lapsed members should not be rebuilt by hand each month. The segment is a rule over people already in the directory, and it moves when their record moves.

The rule does the sorting

Built from what already happened

A gift, a visit, or a membership lapse is enough for the rule. Staff do not re-tag the person in a second file.

They leave the old segment

When a visitor becomes a member, they drop off the visitor segment. You do not edit both lists.

Send to whoever matches today

A welcome note or a renewal reminder uses the people who fit right now, not a file exported last quarter.

The person is still the source

Change the record and the segment follows. The segment is not a frozen copy of names.

Questions about this page

Do we still sort these lists by hand?
No. The segment is a rule. When the record changes, the person moves in or out.
What can a segment represent?
People defined by something that already happened, such as a first visit, a monthly gift, or a membership that lapsed.
